second_sonBACKGROUND AND HISTORY
Demetri grew up as a shadow to James, following him everywhere ever since learning to walk. Only a year apart, the two brothers are practically inseparable, the perfect picture of the whole ‘blonde and doe-eyed’ ideal, apart from their mischievous, pranking ways that have recently drawn the town’s ire. As the second son, the Thornton’s expectations of Demetri are nearly as high as they are of James; his parents hope for him to have an astonishing career as either a doctor or lawyer of some kind. Demetri has other plans, keeping his own dreams close to his chest, even partially hidden from James.
As it is, he works for City Hall recently stepping in as the Mayor’s Chief of Staff, which his law degree is at least nominally useful. It’s something he does because he feels he needs to, taking his brother’s place. He hates politics, but smiles and pretends to love it in part because it takes pressure off of James who he’d do just about anything for. It doesn’t help he’s good at it, something that he’s annoyed by. What he’d love more than anything is to give it all up and start a niche brewery and restaurant. It’s something that would never be acceptable, so for now he plays the good son to his father, and lets loose when he’s with James
PERSONALITY
Demetri is the calm to James’ angry, the sweetness to his vinegar. He’s more like his mother than his father he’s often told, not that he remembers much about her. Where James and their father bully and push, Demetri uses smiles and charm to get what he wants. It makes him the perfect offsider to them both.
He’s smart and good at seeing what people really want, and he uses that skill to excel at his work. Though where his mother was tolerant and kind, Demetri doesn’t have a lot of patience for incompetence, and has a well-hidden cruel streak. He will forgive a great deal, but when the line is finally crossed there is no one worse to have as an enemy.
Demetri has walls because he is a Thornton. He’s used to getting what he wants, but he’s also used to people trying to take advantage of his family connections and name, and using him for the exposure. He’s dated, and is often seen out with a girl on his arm at this club or that, but none of them have been serious, not since high school when his heart was last broken and that’s something Demetri never talks about. He has a lot of acquaintances and is demand socially, but not many of those are friends, and there is no one he’s closer to than his siblings. They get a free pass when it comes to a lot of things, and are quick to be forgiven, unlike others.
Truthfully, Demetri is intimated and sometimes frightened of his father. He’d never admit that aloud, but he’s seen the man rage when he didn’t get his way, something which is thankfully rare. It’s part of the reason he works for him and doesn’t break out on his own. It’s also why he keeps his secrets close to his chest, because he doesn’t want to bear the brunt of his father’s anger if he ever discovered that his second son was unhappy having the family legacy foisted on him. It’s something he’ll continue to bear because he’s not going to see it passed on again. It’s his burden, and he accepts it.
OPINION OF THE RIVALRY
Aware of the rivalry, Demetri follows his brother’s example in ignoring it until he can’t anymore. It is a part of everyday life, but working at the mayor’s office he can’t seem biased. Unlike his brother James, he’s not convinced that their mother’s death has anything to do with the Coombs family. Sometimes an accident is just an accident. He thinks that his younger siblings’ interest in it is pointless, but will support them both in anything they do.
LIFESTYLE
Demetri still lives at the Thornton family home, having taken over what used to be the chauffeur’s rooms over the garage (back when they still had a live-in chauffeur) and converted them into an office/lounge and bedroom. It allows him some independence, but pleases his father to have him close and taking an ‘interest’ in the family estate. Not that he spends much time there. Demetri would rather be at the office, a club, or James’ house than at his own, and he certainly never brings home any of his flings. He likes going out and being seen. It’s one of the ways he takes after his father, and it’s one of the few benefits of the Thornton name.
He’s under pressure from his father to settle down and get married in order to help secure the family line. It’s a tropic he tries to avoid, never wanting to admit that while he likes women and enjoys sleeping with them, it’s men who have his real interest, and it was a boy who broke his heart all those years ago, after threatening to blackmail an infatuated and teenaged Demetri with what they’d done. The boy vanished not long after and only Demetri knows that he wasn't actually a teen runaway.
